LEED PLATINUM CERTIFICATION

On July 13, 2009 BTI-Greensburg was awarded LEED Platinum Certification for the 28,500 sq ft new John Deere Dealership in Greensburg, Kansas. This is the highest honor of sustainable green building practices offered by the U.S. Green Building Council.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Building Design. The Estes Family hired HASTCO Construction to serve as General Contractor for this $3.7 million dollar design-build project. This was the first of many to follow LEED projects for HASTCO Construction.

This project has several distinct honors first of which being the first LEED certified John Deere Facility in the world. It is also the first LEED Platinum Certified Pre-Engineered Steel Building in the U.S. as well as the first LEED Platinum Non-Prototype Facility in Kansas. It cannot be proved, but it is very likely this project is the first site ever to be powered by wind energy during the construction phase.

The LEED ratings focus on five areas that include the site itself, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.

HASTCO Construction builds Green

HASTCO Construction, commercial and industrial Design-Build Contractor of Emporia, KS, has been awarded a design-build contract to rebuild the BTI John Deere facility in Greensburg, KS. The previous facility was destroyed in the devastating tornado of May, 2007, that virtually wiped out the community of Greensburg.

BTI and the Estes Family, with dealerships in Bucklin, Ness City, Pratt and Greensburg have made the commitment to rebuild in Greensburg and to rebuild the new facility as environmentally conscious (GREEN) as possible. This location will feature LEED certification and wind power generation which will make it one of the most energy efficient dealerships in the country. “Building GREEN is the wave of the future,” say Art Kuehler, President of HASTCO Construction. “Though challenging at times it is rewarding to see the impact a properly planned GREEN building can make on the environment, today and tomorrow.”

The city of Greensburg has also made a commitment to re-build GREEN, which has been noticed by Hollywood. Discovery Communications has partnered with actor Leonardo DiCaprio on an environment-focused series that will help launch the company's Planet Green channel. The Discovery Network is set to film a 13 part series titled "Eco-Town" which will follow the town of Greensburg as it rebuilds in an environmentally friendly or "green" manner. The film crew has already started filming and the show is set to air in "early 2008".

This is HASTCO Construction’s second John Deere Place project. Deer Trail Implement (now Prairie Land Partners) was a design-built project located in Emporia, Kansas. This facility has become a prototype for John Deere Place dealerships that are constructing new facilities.

HASTCO Construction and BTI hosted a ground breaking ceremony on Friday, February 1, 2008, on the site of the new dealership. Dignitaries from the City, County and State were in attendance as well as representatives from Deere Company corporate offices.

HASTCO’S EXTREME BUILD DAY AT THE ZOO

Employees of HASTCO Construction gave up their Saturday and volunteered to erect a vet building for the Emporia Zoo. The labor to erect the 24’ x 24’ Liberty Easy-Build building was donated by HASTCO employees and their families. “It was a great time and a rewarding experience,” said Debbie Ash, VP of HASTCO Construction. “Over 80% of our employees were there along with their families.”

According to Steve Trebilcock, Director of the David Traylor Zoo of Emporia, this building is an important part of the AZA accreditation and in helping the zoo provide the highest level of care for the animals. “I know I speak for everyone connected with the Zoo, the City and the EFOZ (Emporia Friends Of the Zoo) organization when I tell you how much it meant to us to have a team such as yours donate their time, energy and expertise to help the zoo move forward.”

2nd WIND GENERATOR GOES UP

Wind energy is just one of the specialties being used in the new John Deere facility in Greensburg, KS as it comes back GREEN. Natural lighting, recycled products, efficient fixtures, and corn and waste oil boilers are a few of the others. The Estes Family, with the help of HASTCO Construction, is building the first LEED Certified Platinum Pre-Engineered Steel Building in the country. “This has been an exciting time for us,” says Art Kuehler, President of HASTCO Construction. “Being a part of the rebuilding of a community and the many firsts is very rewarding.” Besides the Platinum Certification first, this is the first construction site with temporary power being supplied exclusively by wind energy.

When complete the 25,000+ sf building will house sales, parts, and repairs for John Deere Equipment. The state of the art facility, with such items as computerized fluid stations for filling of equipment in the service department, has made this facility one that is being watched closely by John Deere Corporation. Completion date is scheduled for August 2008.

The Discovery Channel is airing a 13-part series on the re-building of Greensburg. Their camera crews have been living in Greensburg for months filming the people, places, and events that are happening as the town rebuilds environmentally friendly. They have focused their efforts on four major projects, BTI being one of them. The show is scheduled to premiere on Planet Green on Sunday, June 15, 8:00 pm CST and will air every Sunday for 12 additional weeks. Additional information may be found at:
