The J-Hawk Best Western was demolished by an EF5 tornado that completely de- stroyed 90% of Greensburg, Kansas on May 4, 2007. The owner’s of this motel made the decision to rebuild and to join others in their community by making this new facility energy efficient and GREEN.
Roof and Wall Treatments: 30 year Composition Shingles, Pre-Finished Smart Siding and Stone Veneer Wainscot.
Special Features: Designed with interior and exterior SIPs walls. Sips is a structural insulated panel system that is more energy efficient and faster to install than standard stick framed construction. Smart Siding and Stone Veneer provide a virtually mainte- nance free exterior. The building was designed and constructed to meet Energy Star. A wind generator is being designed for the property that could provide as much as 60 percent of the motel’s electrical needs.
Special Needs: Reusing the site of the former single story 30 room facility and making it a two story larger (42 guest room) facility. Plans were designed around reusing the existing storm shelter/basement and indoor pool and spa that survived the tornado.
Client: E & R Management LLC is a family run business located in Emporia, Kansas that owns and manages motels throughout Kansas.
